Insomnia

All of us had times when sleep is disturbed. At times, one can’t fall asleep. At others, one wakes up during the night. The result is daytime exhaustion, poor concentration, falling asleep at the wheel, irritability.

Underlying causes can be physical. For example, sleep apnea goes undetected frequently. Once treated, the daytime tiredness and sleepiness go away.

Being in pain, breathing problems, urinary frequency, hormone imbalances are at the helm of many sleeping difficulties.

Some medications cause insomnia, as well as withdrawal from alcohol or other substances.

Other examples are heart problems, thyroid issues, menopause, andropause, which cause insomnia as well.

Many emotional issues coexist with insomnia. For example, we hear that at night is easier to think of problems. Sometimes worrying about not being able to fall asleep becomes the reason not to sleep.

Some people are light sleepers. Street noises and lights are more disruptive for them.

In our practice, we address the medical, psychological underlying causes of sleep difficulties and treat with psychotherapy and medication when needed.
